by , in

Gadgets come as handy, convenient and beneficial for our daily toil whether at school or at work. But these products that make our lives easy are not as perfect as we expect it. Technology also has its downside and flaws. Even your MacBooks cannot escape this imperfection.

Power cords often get frayed and some have gone upset after purchasing a new Magsafe power cord for 80 dollars. This seemed to be a high-priced good to be bought by students and even for professionals who are still at the start of their careers.

But someone who has been pissed off with buying new Magsafe power cords came up with a new idea of producing something that would aid the fraying of such accessory and also to lessen expenses of buying new ones in a local Store. Upon the success of an experimental stage on the Fray fix, this person decided to share it to the public for a very convenient and affordable price.

Killing Season Movie Review

by , in
Spoiler alert!

Blood, gore and extreme violence – it just doesn’t seem to fit any of Robert De Niro’s impressive resume of blockbuster films, but surprisingly, this movie works. John Travolta is no pushover either, as he delivers in this movie, transforming himself into a gaunt, lean and bitter former Serbian soldier who is out for revenge.

The movie begins with scenes from the Bosnian War – a reenactment of course - and how it ended when American and NATO forces intervened. This particular war occurred from 1992 to 1995 and maybe because it is on the other side of the world, Asians for the most part were oblivious to what is now called the ‘most devastating conflict’ since World War II.

Killing Season Movie

There is one scene in the film that is almost reminiscent to Schindler’s list where an American soldier opens a train carriage only to step back in horror and disgust to find hundreds of dead bodies, eyes open in hunger. Theirs was definitely not a peaceful death. It is a powerful image, and one that is repeated again, later in the film.

Fast forward to the next 18 years and we find one Serbian soldier (Travolta) who finally gets the intelligence report he needs to track down and kill the man he thinks is responsible for his people’s untimely demise – Col. Benjamin Ford (De Niro).

What ensues is a deadly game of cat and mouse. It becomes a suspenseful contest of cunning between the two war veterans and their struggle to survive. Each character is successfully revealed to the viewer that it is impossible to choose sides and root for any one of the protagonists.

Now, I won’t reveal how the movies ends, but suffice to say that it was touching to know how one man’s source of bitterness was the other’s source of misery. It’s just brilliant storytelling. Each of them dwelt on the same moment that forever touched - and almost destroyed their lives. Killing Season is definitely not a sci-fi movie, nor is it a documentary filled with boring statistics. Killing Season is quick and to the point. Every minute matters. And if you are not into gore just like I am, turn away from the scenes in the forest and simply focus on the conversation – you won’t regret it.

Killing Season opens in theaters on August 7. Don't forget to check-out trailer below also.

Art Imitates Life: Maja and Kim and Gerald in Between

by , in
Maja Salvador, Kim Chiu

It doesn’t make sense – two beautiful and talented women, fighting over a man. This is a storyline favorite among soap opera writers, it seems. It’s been written about over and over - and over again that it almost it feels like and sounds like a cliché. It’s a plot that demeans women and reduces them to mindless zombies that live in search of an able bodied man. (well – even if the man isn’t able bodied, women apparently still fight over him.)

Art truly imitates life and true to form, we now have two attractive women who are fighting over a man. The tabloids are now full of news that Kim Chiu and Maja Salvador are apparently not in good terms. Maja is in a relationship with Gerald who is Kim’s ex. Ugh. Kim is allegedly sore that Maja went into a relationship with him, even if they already parted ways and have stayed that way for over three years. It’s just in bad taste to talk, write or even think about. Kim is attractive – and can have any man she wants. Maja is the same, why fight over Gerald? Why destroy a friendship over one man when you can have so many others?

But I guess, I am providing a bad example here of two women fighting over a man. After all, Kim is the only one who feels cheated over a relationship that has long been over. Maja is not at fault, even if you say it is palabra de honor (word of honor) between two friends. I mean, should a man be out of bounds merely because he is a friend’s ex? I think yes, IF he cheated but if the relationship died a natural death, they should both be able to date whoever they want, including an ex’s friends.

American Ninja Warrior: Superhuman stunts and Daredevil feats on TV

by , in
AXN featured its newest addition, its spectacular and adrenalin pumped TV program - The American Ninja Warrior TV series. The new TV show is a spin off from a Japanese sports entertainment competition where agility, stamina and endurance is tested.

American Ninja Warrior

In this show, competitors try to beat the clock to go through a show-stopping obstacle course. The difficulty is set by ‘stage’ where physical challenge increases as the contenders progress. Stages by stage and from hundreds of wannabes, the numbers are slowly whittled to a mere handful that competes against each other for the best or shortest, time.

American Ninja Warrior is a must-see indeed. Even if you are not sports-minded, the impossibility of the race course and the span of time given to clear each stage is a nail biter indeed. Each episode is a nail biter from start to finish. Watch the show and root for your favorite contender.

Bruce Lee: 40 years ago and still remembered

by , in
Today, July 20, marks the 40th year when Bruce Lee passed away. He is perhaps the greatest Chinese American action hero in Hollywood. Surpassing even the status of beloved funnyman, Jackie Chan. Lee brought intensity to the big screen, a martial arts God that favored and feared no one. He was a legend.

Across the shore, in Hong Kong, Lee’s daughter, Shannon, spoke at an exhibition set to honor his father’s legacy. She was only 4 years old when the Martial Arts icon died from acute swelling of the brain at age 32 – at the height of his career. Shannon is also the chairwoman of the Bruce Lee Foundation, one of the organizers of the exhibit, which will run for a period of 5 years.

Pacific Rim Movie Review

by , in
There really isn’t much to say about Pacific Rim. Although the concept of the aliens arriving under the ocean is original, the rest of the story feels borrowed and used. The bridge that opens into another dimension feels so much like Stargate or the more recent Avengers movie. The actions sequences between the Kaeju and Jaegers (pronounced Yay-ger) are reminiscent of the Transformers franchise and the plot itself, seems to be taken straight out of the 1980s Voltes V and Daimos. The dialogue is predictable, the characters, forgettable and the ending is pretty much unsurprising.

Pacific Rim Movie

The movie will potentially appeal to the hyper-masculine crowd, however. The fight scenes are vigorous and strategic and while there is no blood and gore, you can see tensed muscles straining in combat, which could be enough for every action fan.

The greatest let down in the movie, in my very objective and discriminatory opinion, is the female heroine. She is a stereotype, wanting to break the female in distress stereotype. She wants to be manly and strong while staying delicate and dependent – two extremes that are impossible to mix. The scene where she runs away and hurriedly closes the door on the shirtless main character is just too cheesy for words. What is she? 15 years old?

I don’t think the movie was a total waste though – there were sensible and sentimental moments here and there. The grief for a lost brother, the love of a lost son, the mourning of an orphan child – all these provide fleeting, poignant moments which make the film bearable. Add the fact that the underdog – nerds are responsible for mankind’s survival, makes it all the more watchable.

Pacific Rim is now showing in theaters nationwide.

Easy Ways to Update Your Bathroom

by , in
You know a gracious home when you see one – the guest bathroom features elegant linen hand and bath towels which may even be monogrammed, there’s a bud vase with a single glorious bloom, a selection of exotic hand soaps and perhaps an incredibly fragrant candle or potpourri. These are the sorts of niceties you see in a home where someone really cares about the comfort and well being of family and friends.

If the home is near a lake or there’s a pool, no doubt you will find a basket full of beach and sun towels, another one filled with flip flops or shower sandals and a trove of thick terry cloth robes for your trip to and from the pool house or shower. This may sound very complicated and expensive to execute but the reality is that when you genuinely care about people, it’s almost second nature to plan ahead and provide for their needs.

elegant linen, Bed, Bath,
On way the most savvy hostesses get things done right is by shopping online – they don’t waste valuable family time running from store to store to shop for the best deals when it’s so easy to do it any time of the day or night from the comfort and safety of home. If you have not shopped online before, take a moment to look at the websites of the major bed and bath stores like http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com you already know and trust because you know you can count on them to stand behind the goods they sell.

When you shop online it’s easy to browse for great ideas and good deals plus you can look forward to getting the goods delivered directly to your door. There’s no need to burn gas, brave traffic or haul stuff when you shop online.

How Much Advertising Should You Put on Your Blog?

by , in
monetize your blog, advertising, make money online

One of the big questions for bloggers is whether or not they should monetize their blogs. If you do decide to generate some income from your blog, one of the most popular ways to do this is to incorporate advertising.

There are pros and cons to consider with advertising on your blog, and you have to ask yourself whether you really want to advertise in the first place. One of the potential problems is that ads can sometimes distract readers from the content and can even make readers distrustful of what you are saying because they feel you are only blogging to make money.

However, if you do decide to use advertising on your blog, here are a few of the considerations to keep in mind.

Start Off Slowly

The first thing to remember is to avoid going over the top. If you go from no ads to ads all over the blog you are likely to damage the relationship with your readers. There are many types of advertising, and whatever you start to experiment with, always remember to take things slowly and avoid cramming your blog with advertisements overnight.

Analyze the Advertising on Other Blogs

Check out other blogs in your niche and find out which types of advertising works and which you definitely want to avoid. You can get a good idea about the balance that you want to achieve by simply looking at other blogs and working out where they have gone wrong or what they are doing right. If you find a type of ad that you feel your readers would not appreciate, make a note to avoid this with your own.

Gloomy Day for Glee: Cory Monteith Found Dead

by , in

When is death considered a welcome release? When is it considered a tragedy? When the deceased is old and fragile, does death become bliss? When the departed is still at the peak of youth, is it called an untimely loss?

Cory Monteith, known to so many Glee fans as Finn Hudson, was found dead on Saturday, July 13 at a hotel in Vancouver. He was 31, an age of so many possibilities, so many chances and so many choices. He was yet to arrive at the peak of his life.

The actor who rose to fame for his smooth voice and adorably awkward dance moves has had a history of substance abuse and addiction. Police responding to the scene have found no evidence of foul play as records reveal that he returned to his room alone. No confirmation has been given regarding speculations on drug overdose.

The Lone Ranger

by , in
The Lone Ranger

There’s still a few more days to go before the ‘Lone Ranger’ hits Philippine shores, and so far, the reviews have been confusing. Personally, I am a Johnny Depp fan, and I have always admired his chameleon like ability to adapt to his cinema roles but when I heard he was playing Tonto, I had a few reservations of my own.

Over the years, I’ve had misgiving about Hollywood cast directors and their choices. Too many times, I feel that film authenticity has suffered if only to place a bigger star to improve billing and to draw in a crowd. Of course, crowd means money…and who can resist an extra ca-ching?

I don’t doubt Depp will be a good Tonto, a believable Tonto, a remarkable Tonto. But why get a North American A-lister star to play a Native American role? Why not take a chance on a virtual nobody and build the story then? This is reminiscent of Gylenhall’s Prince of Persia, where the normally charming Jake was covered with a Snooki-like (Jersey Shore) artificial tan.

But, I speak of another movie – and I suppose that is not fair. So anyway, movie fans, Johnny Depp fans, ‘Lone Ranger’ fans – let’s flock to the theaters on July 17 and see for ourselves how believable Edward Scissorhands, Capt. Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka - will fare as Tonto, the ‘Lone Ranger’s’ sidekick.

The ‘Lone Ranger’ will be shown on theaters starting this July 17. See Trailer below.

Despicable Not: The Minions of Despicable Me 2

by , in
Despicable Me Movie

Since the release of its first movie, the minions of the Despicable Me franchise has won the hearts of viewers the world over. And who can blame anyone? These pint sized, yellow, bubbly, innocent little things that are blindly loyal to their master Gru are powerfully invincible….and eternally funny. These creatures are so powerful they can withstand any blast – nuclear or otherwise. This could very well be the number one feature any super villain could ask for. But what is most remarkable about these weird little munchkins is their loyalty to Gru, an indication that they would follow Gru to the ends of the Earth….if that is where he wishes to go.

The fame the Minions have earned for themselves have extended far beyond the screen. Over the past few weeks, McDonald outlets all over the country have experienced a new but not unwelcome shortage of Minion toys from their Happy Meals. Customers, young and old alike have ordered, if only to become owners of these extremely cute, extremely adorable little yellow characters. The craze has been such that fans are now starting to gather trivia about them…and since I am not one to disappoint my readers, here’s several tidbits about them:

The Minions were actually modeled after physically similar characters - the cheerful Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Willy Wonka) and the bold and brave Jawas from Star Wars – an unlikely combination that absolutely works. Oh, and did I mention that the directors themselves voiced them? They must have had a blast - literally!

Candy Crush and The Social Games Phenomenon

by , in
candy crush

Are you familiar with social games? If you’re still wondering what those games are, just log in to your Facebook account and see the games there. Those are just some of the types of social games all of us are “enjoying”. One popular social game now, is none other than Candy Crush Saga.

And apparently the developer of the candy puzzle game is up to something bigger. In a report by MoneyMorning.com, “A Candy Crush Saga IPO could be in the offing as its maker King is lining up banks to put together a U.S. initial public offering, according to The Wall Street Journal.” It would seem that game developer King is really raking in the success of its various social games.

Going into detail with social gaming, Candy Crush is just one of the many games that are becoming virally popular in social media circles and even on mobile gadgets. In the general sense, social games are any games that require players to ask for direct or indirect involvement from other human players in order to progress within the game. Other examples of social games include Words with Friends, foxybingo, and the all new Plants vs Zombies Adventures. There are, however, slight differences to these aforementioned games.

Words with Friends, is a multiplayer social game requiring you and the other players to have the app in your smartphone or mobile, or to be simultaneously online over at Facebook. The game foxybingo, has its own community site that you need to have an account to play. It then lets you play real money bingo and other casino games with the opportunity of chatting with co-players. As for games like Plants vs Zombies adventures, they follow the format of Zynga games Farmville and CityVille. You build your town and go on adventures all in one player mode. Social gaming applies when the game requires you to ask friends for help in accessing the next levels of the game.

Returning to Candy Crush Saga, “(the game) is presently the #1 game on Facebook and the 2nd-most popular free game available on Apple Inc.’s App Store,” MoneyMorning.com details. Whether or not having a public offering for the game would be successful is a different argument altogether. Maybe they should study first how Zynga did it.
