Globe Telecom cell sites received radiation-safety certificates from the Department of Health, which means that radio frequency signals from the facilities do not cause any hazard on people’s health.
Head of Network Technologies Strategy for Globe, Emmanuel Estrada proudly announced, “The radiation-safety certificates for every cell site that we have in the country are a proof that concerns over potential health hazard coming from base stations are without basis.”
This said certificates given by the department were based on the guidelines set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) regarding the maximum and allowable exposures to radio frequency fields for humans.
Estrada also pointed that normally, radio signals follow the ‘inverse-square law of physics’ which means that signal level from a single cell is completely reduced as distance from the antenna is also increased. He then added that, radiation at ground level is usually lower when compared to the levels of radiation released from two-way radio of security personnel or a cell phone.
Added to that, he also uttered that “dynamic control,” the latest of technologies which enables both the cell site, base station and most of all, the handset of subscribers to reduce power output at a good level while providing efficient service. It has been proven effective in reducing radiation levels, power consumption for the base stations and also, for longer endurance of handset batteries.
As a result of the survey conducted, it was found that radio frequency exposures emitted by the base stations in public areas including malls, schools, hospitals have met with the international standards of safety.
Compared with radio frequency exposures from radio and television broadcast transmitters, exposures from base stations are a thousand times lower. He also added that the strength of radio frequency fields is higher at it source but diminishes with distance due to the inverse-square law.
Radio signals from cell sites are referred to as non-ionizing. Other low frequency devices that emit such kinds of non-ionizing radio signals are transistor radios, microwave ovens and baby monitors and two-way walkie-talkies. On another aspect, ionizing radiations cause high risk of adverse health risks and these are from x-rays, ultraviolet rays and gamma rays – instrumental for breaking chemical bonds in DNA.
