Globe Telecom bets on high school techies

by , in

Globe Telecom President & CEO Ernest Cu welcomes at The Globe Tower 32 high school students who were selected to participate in this year’s Globe Junior Mobile Wizard program.

Go on vacation, enroll in a tutorial class, learn new skills, apply for a job - these are just some of the many ways where students can spend their summer. But for some high school techies they grab this rare opportunity to build their future through Globe Telecom’s Junior Mobile Wizard program. It is a six-week summer program offered to Globe employees' high school children. It gives the teens a chance to learn outside a campus setting and become a part of a real company setting as they interact with customers.

They are tasked to demonstrate and discuss the latest gadgets and mobile data services, as well as other Globe offers and services, providing them the opportunity to assist customers who may wish to apply for the latest postpaid and broadband plans or avail of other Globe promos.

This year, a total of 32 qualified for the program, with 25 coming from Metro Manila, 5 from Cebu and 2 from Davao. The students, aged 15 to 17, are in second to fourth year high school level.

It began with a 2-day training at the telecommunication’s headquarters in Bonifacio Global City. The students were then assigned in 7 Globe stores located in several areas in the Philippines.

Truly a great way to spend their summer right? Not only that they were able to learn about Globe products but it also develops their social, business and entrepreneurial skills.

Globe launches "TxtHIV to 8504" campaign

by , in

Fernando Esguerra, Globe OIC for Corporate Social Responsibility, demonstrates how TxtHIV operates. With him are (from L-R): PNAC Executive Director Dr. Chito Avelino; S&S TechnologiesPhilippines President and CEO Mark Soriano; and PHANSUP Chairman Oscar Picazo.

There are only seven countries in the world which are experiencing a steady increase in the number of HIV cases and the Philippines is one of them. The Philippines received 12 new cases of HIV daily in 2013 from only one case in 2009, with 95% of them involving males. Since 1984, 17,450 Filipinos have been reported with HIV, 1,599 of them have progressed into AIDS.

With this increasing number of HIV cases in the Philippines, Globe Telecom in collaboration with key partner organization launches the “TxtHIV to 8504” campaign. It's a SMS-based information, counselling and clinic referral drive for people who wants to be tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but are afraid of facing societal discrimination.

With your Globe postpaid or prepaid mobile number, you can just text HIV to 8504 and answer five yes or no questions via an interactive voice recording to check if testing is necessary. You will then be provided with contact details and addresses of the nearest specialized accredited health centers where you can go for assessment, counseling, and immediate treatment. All calls will remain very impersonal and confidential.

At present, only one percent of the general population has been tested for HIV since most people are afraid to ask for help or simply do not know where to get information.

So if you think you are at risk, you should really take the first step. TxtHIV to 8504!

Globe extends Free Facebook until April 25

by , in
Good news to all Facebook addicts! Globe is extending again their Free Facebook promo until April 25, 2014 - which means it will be available to over 38 million subscribers allowing access to this top social networking site with no data charges.

Amazing right?  This promo has been extended a lot of times already because of the overwhelming response from the subscribers. And it is just perfect for the summer season to allow users  to enjoy an innovative, seamless, and worry-free Facebook experience.

This  promo was even recently showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in his keynote.  Zuckerberg cited the partnership with Globe in connecting more Filipinos to the Internet, as he shared his vision of a connected world through his pioneering project Internet.org launched last year. The collaboration between Globe and Facebook paved the way for all Globe prepaid, postpaid, and TM customers to enjoy free access to the social networking site alongside customer experience innovations that address the fear of mobile browsing.

Among these customer experience innovations include accessibility on feature phones and smartphones* across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or Facebook’s mobile site m.facebook.com.

Customers are also guaranteed of no billshock or “nakaw load” as you will be notified if you will incur data charges once a link that leads out of Facebook is clicked.

For a seamless experience, you can also enjoy a one-click registration to the data plan of choice to continue browsing sites or links outside Facebook without having to leave the site. In the spirit of customization, recommended data plans consider a subscriber’s available prepaid balance and/or megabytes (MB) balance of existing data plan.

Lastly, if you don't have enough prepaid load - you can “loan” a 10MB data plan for only P10 which will be deducted on your succeeding top-up so you can fully explore content outside Facebook.

So what are you waiting for? If you are still not connected just  dial *143# and select FREE FB or text FREEFB to 8888 to get more. You can also go to m.facebook.com/free on the phone's web browser or open the Facebook mobile app while on the Globe network to access Free Facebook.

Globe Telecom “transforms” cell sites into palm trees

by , in

Photo shows actual deployment of aesthetic tree solution in Urdaneta Village in Makati City

Globe Telecom has introduced the use of cell sites disguised as palm trees to address aesthetic concerns over the use of towering cell sites, which are necessary in effecting seamless connectivity in exclusive villages.

The offer to build palm-like cellphone towers follows the introduction of the outdoor distributed antenna system (ODAS), a state of the art technology that makes use of specialized lamp posts built with radio signal transmission capability.

“The use of tree-shaped cellphone towers is part of Globe Telecom’s efforts to improve wireless signal in exclusive villages in line with our network transformation initiative,” said Emmanuel Estrada, Globe Head of Network Technologies Strategy, referring to the company’s $790 million network and IT modernization program which will be completed within the year.

So far, Globe Telecom has utilized aesthetic tree solution in enhancing connectivity in Urdaneta Village in Makati City, Estrada said.

According to Estrada, the use of palm-tree cellphone towers is most effective in camouflaging gigantic cell sites that are sometimes considered as eye sores by some residents in exclusive villages. “The disguised cell phone towers will be difficult to identify as such and they even work to beautify the area where these infrastructures are installed,” Estrada said.

Certain residents in exclusive villages have been opposing the installation of cell sites in their respective areas, citing aesthetic concerns over such infrastructures. Still, cell sites are critical in providing seamless connectivity.

The ODAS solution, on the other hand, uses fiber-optic cables to distribute a base station’s signals to multiple low power active antenna systems installed in nominal locations inside residential subdivisions. It also supports all frequency bands used by wireless carriers, including the cutting edge long-term evolution (LTE) technology, providing stronger support for mobile data services.

The ODAS solution has been effectively deployed in Dasmarinas Village.

Deca Homes Resort and Residences now a Wifi Hotspot

by , in
Deca Homes Resort and Residences Wifi Hotspot, Globe Tattoo
It shows Mintal Davao as one of their Hotspot Areas

Everytime I set-up an Adhoc Network using my connection from Globe Tattoo superstick or use Intel's Wifi Technology, I always see this Tattoo Wifi network.

I didn't care much about it since I already have my own internet connection. I thought it was just the WAN that we Globe Tattoo Superstick subscribers get signal or the signal the towers give here in Deca Homes. But when my friend James asked me a favor yesterday about connecting to this wifi network I was so schocked upon learning that Deca Homes Resort and Residences is actually a wifi hotspot and you can connect to that network.

It gives me more relief knowing that I have this back-up connection everytime I reached 800mb limit in my Globe Tattoo prepaid superstick connection. (updated: I am now a Globe Postpaid user) I am already a happy subscriber because the speed that I get is unbelievably fast compared to the previous ISP I have tried before but this one is another reason to be happy. It seems like my appeal for good ISP has been answered. :)

I've never been this so happy with my internet service provider. Thanks to Globe

Look at the download speed, its 7.19Mbps even though it is just Prepaid. How much more with Postpaid? Whoah! Globe Tattoo is just awesome!

I'm already back to watching my fave TV series. Thanks to their system upgrade. It's really GENIUS.
