Celebrities Engaged in Politics Part 2: Supreme Court Decides to Unseat Lucy Torres-Gomez

Leyte 4th District representative, Lucy Torres-Gomez was formally unseated last March 26. This was due to the decision given by the high tribunal sitting en banc that Lucy was not an eligible substitute to husband Richard Gomez, who originally ran during the 2010 automated elections.

An election-related case was filed by Silverio Tagolino, who lost to Lucy in the previously held elections. The complainant Tagolino sent to the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) a case which aimed to question the immediate substitution of Lucy to husband Richard’s candidacy.

Richard was subject to a disqualification petition filed months prior to the 2012 May elections due to a complaint that he was not a resident of Ormoc City prior to the period of filing for candidacy and that he was not able to comply with the residency requirement which was at least a year.

Due to the decision given by the en banc which urged Lucy to vacate her position, she then filed a motion for reconsideration and expressed that she continues to trust the system during a recent press briefing.

Lucy also pointed that she is confident that despite what has happened recently, she is still assured that the people’s trust is with her. Having done her part in the past three years, Lucy said that she has served her people well.

On the other hand, Lucy is still allowed to run for this coming May 13 2013 elections despite the fact that she was unseated months before her previous term expires.
