Feeler Gauges at its Best

For machinists, it could be a hard task to measure gaps which are hard to reach. Good thing there are calipers to do this job. But calipers have limitations also. So, this would be the time that feeler gauges are of great help.

These feeler gauges come in different sizes and are used to measure gaps and slots in the parts of the machine which are deemed hard to reach. Before using these kinds of measuring gadget, first, you need to make certain or choose the right range of feeler gauges for a specific gap you want to be measured. These gadgets come in a set of ranges and the use of more than one blade to measure a gap can be possible.

Another important tip in using these gauges is to oil the blade. This should be done before any measuring procedure will take place. Problems would occur if the gauges are not oiled as it might stuck in the gap thus, causing damage to the machine when you forcefully attempt to remove it. Place oil on a rag or on a piece of cloth and apply it to the blade.

Next, slide in the blade into a gap and match it with the right fit. Don’t dare to force a gauge in if it does not fit, look for a smaller one until; you find the right gauge which fits perfectly the gap.

After usage, don’t forget to wipe the feeler gauges. Place it in a secured closed box. Good safekeeping will prevent damages on the feeler gauges for it to be used for years.
