Top Casino Movies of all time

Whilst going out to a casino is a great way to have fun with your friends, having a cosy night in watching a marathon of monumental casino flicks is just as fun and probably much cheaper. So, without further ado, here’s a list of some of the best casino films of all time.

The clue may be in the title, but Scorsese’s Casino is a timeless classic that depicts how the mob changed Vegas forever. De Nero takes centre stage in one of his finest career performances, and Casino has an amazing film-noir feel that wonderfully showcases all of the high-life, glamour and danger of the Nevada gambling scene.

Oceans 11 & 13

The star studded line-up of Brad Pitt, George Clooney et al was first broadcast on our movie screens in 2001 with the arrival of Ocean’s 11. The plot is centred on a group of 11 heist experts that plan to rip off three Las Vegas casinos owned by bad guy Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) in one evening. Headed by Danny Ocean (Clooney), with the assorted talents of, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and others, the gang is aiming for the haul of a life time. A few year’s later the final Sequel, Ocean’s 13, was released with Pacino starring as a corrupt billionaire casino owner.

Based on a true story, 21 centres on a bunch of MIT geeks who travel to Vegas to count cards on the blackjack tables. After raking in millions, casino security eventually cotton on and the team get their comeuppance. Critics seem to be split on this one, but the film is no doubt strengthened by the excellence of Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess and Laurence Fishburne.

Leaving Las Vegas

This Oscar-winning epic is a tale of dignity and despair as Nicholas Cage plays an alcoholic who moves to Vegas to drink himself to death. Whilst there, he meets a prostitute who falls in love with him, Elizabeth Shue, and they share in each other’s misery. Although it’s a gritty watch, it’s definitely worth viewing.

Casino Royale

Daniel Craig's first appearance as James Bond reinvigorated the entire 007 franchise and Casino Royale features some deadly and thrilling poker scenes that are must watch for any casino fan.

More to Come…

With the recent attention online gambling has received, particularly in the States, Brad Furman directs ‘Runner Runner’; a film about the workings of an off-shore poker site starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake. You can watch that trailer at poker videos, and the film is scheduled for cinema release in September 2013.
